Service is impeccable. Drinks were amazing (we also got the GT manhattan and GT old fashioned, as well as the Socratic method --very peaty & leathery, fantastic-- and Sausalito fog--herbal & refreshing). The beef tartare was wonderful, with bites of bleu cheese & cubed pear. The sweet potato pappardelle with braised beef was savory with a hint of spice. The burger was juicy, and well cooked. It wasn't my favorite burger ever, and it's expensive, but I would say it's a flavorful, juicy, hearty option. Dessert: they gifted me a lovely hummingbird cake that was sweet and delicious. My husband got the chocolate pudding cake--I have a nut allergy, so they put the nut products on the side so I could try his, which was very kind of them. The pudding cake was rich and delicious. I got the vanilla rhubarb sundae, which was jammy, tart and sweet. I really enjoyed it; it made me feel like a kid again; the rhubarb was a sorbet almost, and tasted like one of those popsicles you'd get as a child from the ice cream man. The creamy vanilla balanced it well; I think it would be even more balanced with crumbled graham cracker. It was busy at 5:30, when we had our reservations, and quite loud. I'd recommend reservations! We had a really great time here!
For my bday dinner, we ended up booking the dining room. Compared to other Michelin start places, I was disappointed in the food and ambiance. It just was all forgettable, nothing was wrong with it, but it didn't leave an impression. The service was professional and coordinated, can't say anything bad there. It felt like the place was full of tourists and I liked the local scene, so this was another miss for me. People weren't dressed up either. The dishes seemed like things they had been cooking for years rather than doing something new weekly or even daily. Maybe the tavern is more fun and local, but I'd skip this one.
Every point of service from hostess to food runners is set up to make you feel welcome without fussing over you. You must, must, must have their Hamachi Crudo. It's a small plate of magic in both presentation and flavor. All their dishes use seasonal ingredients sourced from the local farmers' market just blocks away. I have a new found love of snap peas, rhubarb, lemon, and radishes after lunching here.
We went to try the tasting menu, but instead, ordered almost all of the entrees. For 4 people we ordered 6-7 entrees and were full, but not stuffed. Portions were a bit small. The duck entree was a chef's seasonal special and was amazing. Shrimp & the sauce + fish entree were very good as well. And the complementary bread- the best bread & butter I've had in a while!
SERVICE: Most service in NY seems like they hate their customers. But I think it's just because I'm not from NY? Either way, so many other customers (non-local) said the same thing so I know I'm not alone. Despite that, the food was awesome. FOOD: $21 DUCK LIVER MOUSSE: a hefty portion of delicious liver accompanied by kumquat jam. Put those on top a freshly toasted bread and it's perfection! Comes with some pickled vegetables. LOVED THIS! $23 BEEF TARTARE: the Dijon vinegar sauce beneath the beef tartare was the perfect complement of flavors bursting in your mouth. I wish there were more crispy pieces for texture, but it was delicious! The cheese (bayley hazen, blue cheese) was pungent & amazing! LOVED THIS! $38 ARCTIC CHAR: this is a fish similar to salmon. It's VERY LIGHT, comes in a light broth that I absolutely loved! Exactly what I wanted. OVERALL: I loved the vibe and food here. Would always come back.
This is a place I have heard of for a long time, but have never been able to attend... on my last trip to NYC, I was invited there. I was Not prepared for the fixed menu of the back restaurant. It is very interesting restaurant layout; a vibrant bar and bistro in the front; and a more subdued fine dining experience toward the rear. The diver is very lively in the front, and nice and spacious and understated in the back. The food was wonderful, and they were very accommodating with my dietary restriction. While the food was wonderful, honestly the outstanding part of the evening was the stunning service. It was seamless, polite, knowledgeable and engaged. I have not had such outstanding service in a very long time. They handled dietary restrictions easily, and did some custome cocktails with precision and fervor. Bravo Bravo... FYI they have an amazing pastry chef who creates amazing vegan delights. Honestly I am interested in seeking out service leading establishments after that meal. Highly recommend for the experience... Cannot speak to parking... NYC... use public transportation....
First night in New York decided to enjoy a nice meal at the Gramercy Tavern which is located in the Flatiron district. They serve up some interesting cocktail names and the server did also say they change the names od the drinks from time to time. It was a fun girls night so we all ordered three drinks to enjoy with our meal. We also decided to share all our food. We ordered the citrus & beets, beef tartar, Tavern hamburger, roast duck, and a pasta dish. Everything was cooked well and I did enjoy the pasta dish but I forgot what the name was! The roast duck also has enjoyable flavors. Our server was fun and we overall just had a wonderful dinner filled with fun memories.
Our group of 6 came in here for lunch while being violently hungover after a bender that consisted of American Bar to the Spaniard to Roscioli to Peculier Pub. Just a rough one. I could do that in college but I really feel it now smh. All this to say, Gramercy Tavern brought us back to life. I walked in here and felt like I walked into an Anthropology. I mean that in a compliment of the highest regard... Nobody touching Anthro, idc. The seemingly hundreds of flower arrangements, the natural light flowing in, the colorful art on the walls... It's just so happy in here. I sat out on hair of the dog and ordered a black americano because I'm a warrior, haha. We started with a dozen oysters and the grilled flatbread platter... I need to go on a side quest here about this flatbread platter. This was one of the best decisions we had made all weekend, honestly probably the best. This flatbread HAS to be made in house with how it was tasting. God it was so good... It reminded me of making homemade tortillas back in elementary school on Cinco De Mayo. Those were like CRACK. When we destroyed the flatbread and there were half the dips left, our waitress came by and said "do you guys want some more flatbread?" ... We all just kind of made eye contact with each other around the table like "That's an option!?!?" We got a re-up on the flatbread and sent that to the shadow realm as well. All this to say, get the flatbread. I think 4 of the 6 of us got burgers lol, but it was so necessary with being that hungover... One of those hangovers where if you think too hard your thoughts will rattle off of your brain. I was fighting for my life. I got my burger medium rare, as that's what the recommend and it was a little too rare for me ahahha but nobody to blame but myself, because I asked for this. Still good though don't get it twisted. The chips that came with the burger were perfect as well. For dessert, we got the Apple Cider donuts and the Chocolate Chunk Cookie. When the apple cider donuts came my internal dialogue was like "Damn, $18 for 3 little donuts" ... but I've never been so happy to be proven wrong. These were the best donuts I've ever had in my life. Granted, I'm not the biggest donut guy ever but I have dabbled, and these are IT! I also need to highlight the staff, as they are LOCKED in here. Bringing all our plates at the same time and clearing them in unison is such a small attention to detail that makes a HUGE difference. It's not in a try hard way either. They are always smiling and seem genuinely happy to be working here, and it's infectious. I actually just got back from the Locked In Factory, and they knew the entire Gramercy Tavern staff... One of the best vibes of any restaurant I have been to in New York City, even while battling a ruthless hangover. I'LL BE BACK FOR THAT FLATBREAD! FLATBREAD ALL STARS! IG @jnov_ Tiktok @jnov_reviews
Came by for dinner the other night and it was a decent experience. Gramercy Tavern is a Michelin 1 star restaurant and features a tavern for more casual Millennial/Gen Z dining or the dining room for more senior Boomer 5 course white tablecloth dining. Made a reservation for the dining room and my table was ready upon arrival. The tavern showcases an open kitchen which is open to staff only. Staff are wearing a uniform blue dress shirt along with an apron. The Gen Zstaff were wearing ill-fitting dress shirts... Upon arrival, there is a coat check (bring some small bills for tips). During my visit, it was Restaurant Week where the dining room was participating for lunch. To my surprise, a good portion of the evening tasting menu was also available for Restaurant Week... The dining room is starting to show its age with some of the cushions at the booth starting to wear out. I counted at least 4 light bulbs in one section of the dining room that were burnt out. The loo was also quite casual, not quite in line with a Michelin 1 star restaurant... Service by the staff throughout the evening was attentive and cordial. The dining room seems to be a special occasion restaurant where every other table seemed to be celebrating some type of birthday or anniversary...some of the diners were quite green to the fine dining scene. Despite being marked as a New American/Contemporary restaurant, I felt this restaurant was leaning towards the Traditional American flair with a slight tilt towards the New American. As other Yelpers mentioned, the flavoring on the dishes was uneven, some were on the bland side and other were quite salty and rich... Started off with the arctic char which was a light and refreshing way to start of the meal. Moved on to the sweet potato roll which was served with a super fragrant and light butter spread. The sweet potato roll was decent, although I've had lighter versions of rolls. The marinated beets was added on the house and was one of the highlights of the evening with light and refreshing flavors. The squid ink lumache pasta featured a generous portion of perfectly al dente pasta along with 3 clams and 3 pieces of perfectly poached pieces of lobster. Excellent pasta course. The striped bass course was interesting. I felt that the bass was over salted although I did enjoy the contrasting textures of the pan fried bass along with a soft interior. The complementary bok choy was interesting as bok choy tends to be a lower end vegetable... The lamb course was good although on the bland side. The loin was quite lean and the accoutrements were definitely on the very rich and heavy side...not quite what I had expected. The side of mushrooms were also quite salty... Meal ended off with the chocolate cream pie which was super sweet and rich... Post dessert, the waitstaff brought some additional sweets along with some bread for the following day. ~$220/head after tax and gratuity for dinner in the dining room.
